CLIENT: University of Canberra
IA recently entered the Lodge on the Lake design ideas competition for the Prime Minister of Australia’s residence and was shortlisted. The competition was called on by the University of Canberra and the Gallery of Australia Design. We collaborated with MALA Studio who provided the landscape design.
The design response attempts to draw on the sensory nature of the shearers shed and Queenslander which is purely driven by practicality and its response to the environment. Deep eaves create prominent roofs that are tied into the landscape by being pulling down to the ground at strategic touching points. This imbeds the building within the site whilst allowing spaces to open towards key aspects and orientations.
The design does not attempt to recreate an Australian style rather an Australian practicality and a deep connection with our unique landscape identity which results in the aesthetics.
